Mayors Health & Fitness Hikes in Fairmount Park
Spring 2002 Hikes! It has been said that Philadelphia is one of the fattest and most unhealthy cities in the nation. Well not anymore! Its time to get fit, and theres no better place to get in shape than in our very own Fairmount Park, renowned as one of the largest and most beautiful urban park systems in the country. Join Fairmount Park staff or volunteers as we hike along woodland streams, pass by some of the countrys oldest historic homes, or catch a view of the city skyline from a commanding hillside. Walking reduces personal stress and will make you feel great. Join us for fitness hikes close to your neighborhood or be adventurous and attend them all! Fitness hikes are free. Bring a friend! Wear sneakers or hiking shoes and bring water. Each hike is rated easy, moderate, or challenging. For information and directions about specific hikes, call the number listed with the hike below. Get in shape on this six-mile hike along portions of the more rugged orange trail where we will pass by forest restoration sites and enjoy birds and plants along the way. We will start at Bells Mill Road, hike to the famous Devils Pool and nearby Shakespeare Rock, and return along Forbidden Drive. If everyone is up to it, we might take a return alternate trail higher up the side of the gorge. Meet at Bells Mill picnic area at Forbidden Drive and Bells Mill Road. Limber up on this three-mile hike while exploring field, forest and wetlands habitat. A highlight will be observing butterflies and identifying wildflowers in Pennypacks best meadow habitat.
